Reason for Sailing
Christopher Newport was a European explorer from England. His mission was discover riches, find a western sea route to Asia, and colonize the colony of Virginia. He was the captain of a ship called the "Susan Constant" which carried settlers for the Virginia Company in 1607. On his way there, he found the settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. This became the first permanent settlement for the English in North America.
Route Taken and Obstacles Along the Way
His voyage began in England, a country that is an island located on the western edge of the continent of Europe. He arrived on the North American continent in 1607 and helped to establish the Jamestown settlement. Over several years, he made four more trips from England to Jamestown. Each time he brought more settlers and supplies.
The land conditions in Jamestown were not similar to the conditions they were used to in England. There was not many animals to hunt in Jamestown and the water was not safe to drink. Because of that, the European settlers died due to disease and starvation.
